In the Spring of 1948 Beta Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was chartered at Brooklyn College under the auspices of Kappa Beta Sigma Chapter of Brooklyn, N.Y. The eight brothers who became the charter members and officers of Beta Lambda Chapter were:
George Howard, President The newly formed chapter enthusiastically integrated itself into the campus activities by joining the Inter-Fraternity Council, participating in the College Chest Drive, and entering contestants in the track and field events. To commence the social activities of the chapter,a party was held at the home at Brother Hubert Smith, concurrent with which a drawing for an Emerson Portable Radio was awarded to Miss Esther Stuart of New York City. A series of smokers were given by the chapter which culminated in the formation of the Crescent Club. In June, 1948, an intiation was held bringing the strength of the Chapter to twelve men. The newly added Sigmas were Brothers Alfred Robbins, Clarence Jackson, Peter Suydam and Lionel Jardine. The Chapter commenced the Fall of 1948 activities by co-sponsoring with Alpha Delta Chapter at City College and Kappa Beta Sigma Chapter of Brooklyn, N.Y. a post Brooklyn-City football game party at the exclusive Provident Professional club of Brooklyn. Participating in the festivities of the evening were such Sigma notables as: Brother H. A. Howard, Director of Bigger and Better Business; Brother William E. Doar, Jr. present National Executive Secretary and Brother Hutson Lovell; Director of Social Action. |
